Two Eastern Conference teams just outside the playoff picture are on ESPN tonight, as the Islanders host the Red Wings on Long Island.
Things are not going well for the Islanders, as the team has been on a six-game losing streak and has earned just two wins in 2023. As a result, New York has slipped out of a postseason spot, sitting in sixth in a very competitive Metropolitan Division.
Offense continues to be the major issue with the Islanders. The team is one of nine clubs to average under three goals per game, and are averaging 1.92 goals per game since the turn of the new year. While Ilya Sorokin is having a Vezina-caliber year, his efforts have not been enough to make up for the offensive woes.

The Red Wings are even further down the standings. Detroit got off to a strong start to the year but has since floated right around the .500 mark.
The two teams met once prior this season. That was a 3-0 win for the Red Wings in early November, as Ville Husso made 24 saves in his second shutout of the year.
