The Mets beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 10-1, on Saturday to get their fourth win of spring training.
Here are the takeaways…
– Prospect Blade Tidwell dazzled on Saturday in his second start of spring training, tossing two perfect innings with five strikeouts. He needed just nine pitches to strike out the side in the second for an immaculate inning against big leaguers Josh Lowe, Eloy Jiménez, and José Caballero.
Tidwell showed off his speed too, topping out at 99.1 mph on his fastball.
– Luisangel Acuña was hit in the arm area by a Shane McClanahan fastball in the top of the second inning. He remained in the game and stole second base. Acuña then left the game early and was replaced by prospect Jett Williams at shortstop in the top of the third inning.
– Fellow pitching prospect Dom Hamel replaced Tidwell on the mound in the third inning, and came close to duplicating the starter’s performance. Hamel threw two no-hit innings of relief, striking out three Rays and walking one.
– Jose Siri hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning against his former team to give the Mets an early lead. It’s Siri’s second homer of the spring. He finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk and the three RBI.
– The Mets exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning after loading the bases with two outs. Alexander Canario, Williams, and Jared Young all picked up an RBI by getting walked. José Azocar drove in two runs on a single, a wild pitch scored another, and Donovan Walton tacked on one more with a double to make it a 10-0 game.
– Jeff McNeil got the start at second base and hit in the leadoff spot, going 1-for-3 with a run scored. It’s just his second hit of the spring over 13 at-bats.
– With two outs in the top of the first inning, Jesse Winker crushed a double to the wall in center field. He finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk, run scored, and strikeout.
– Reed Garrett tossed a scoreless inning of relief, while Sean Reid-Foley made his spring ’25 debut and allowed one hit with one walk over 0.2 IP.
– Brett Baty picked up another hit to continue his strong spring, going 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored. Francisco Alvarez went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts, a walk, and run scored.
