If he wasn’t hitting home runs for the Mets, Brandon Nimmo could seriously consider a career in motivational speaking.
Both were on display Wednesday night in New York’s 10-0 shellacking of the Washington Nationals, which completed a sweep of the division rival and put a bow on an 11-2 record against them this season.
Nimmo’s three-run homer in the fourth put a cap on the Mets’ nine-run inning and was his second home run in his last five games – possibly a sign that the outfielder, who had two home runs in his previous 25 games, is finally beginning to break out of a second-half slump.
After the game, SNY reporter Steve Gelbs spoke to Nimmo on the field and asked him what the feeling of the team is heading into their final home series of the regular season, four games against the Philadelphia Phillies starting on Thursday.
An impassioned Nimmo answered with a plea to Mets fans everywhere.
“We need your help. We need everybody to get out here! We need this place full! This is playoff baseball! This is what you guys want!”

“We’re ready to go. This is gonna be playoff baseball and Mets fans, we need you guys to fill this place up,” Nimmo said, motioning to the crowd. “This place needs to be rocking on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. We need your help. We need everybody to get out here, we need this place full. This is playoff baseball, this is what you guys want. Let’s go! Let’s go Mets!”
Nimmo’s call to action got the crowd fired up and perhaps just sold a few more tickets in the process.
After all, New York enters its final series at home two games ahead of the Atlanta Braves for the final NL Wild Card spot and tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second spot (the Mets own the tiebreaker over the Diamondbacks which, technically, puts them ahead of Arizona in the standings).
Depending on how the series against Philadelphia goes, the NL East division still isn’t out of the question for New York either. The Mets will enter Thursday seven games back of the Phillies who lost to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night.
The four-game set will also offer New York a chance at some revenge after Philadelphia took two out of three against the Mets last weekend at Citizens Bank Park.
