If you’ve followed this Mets team you shouldn’t be surprised by the outcome of Thursday’s thrilling 4-2 win over the Brewers in Milwaukee.
Coming back from being down two runs in the ninth inning against the Brewers’ stud closer, Devin Williams. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that the miraculous 2024 season for the Mets would come to an end.
They had just two hits heading into the ninth, but a Francisco Lindor walk followed by a Brandon Nimmo single set the stage for another chapter in this storybook year for the Mets. Pete Alonso, who was in the midst of a month-long slump and had just one hit in this three-game series was up.
With free agency looming and the Mets about to be eliminated, the slugging first baseman took a 3-1 changeup from Williams the other way and over the right-field wall to put the Mets in front.
The fans in Milwaukee were shocked, the fans in Citi Field watching the game were in a frenzy. But Mets president of baseball operations was not so surprised.
“We talk about resiliency, talk about never quitting it’s cliche unelss you do it. This group has consistently done it,” Stearns told SNY’s Steve Gelbs after the game. “We just saw one of the greatest games in Mets history. It’s a franchise that’s had notable late-inning, late-game comebacks in the playoffs. To be a part of this with group is special.”
Stearns later said: “I expected something good to happen in that ninth inning. I really did. There was no way this season was going to end without something.”
Of course, when you talk about the best games in Mets history it’s a shortlist. The 1986 playoffs saw the Mets overcome the Houston Astros in 16 innings, and then the Bill Bucknor play in Game 6 of the World Series that year against the Red Sox are normally at the top.
But it’s hard to argue this one, and Alonso’s heroics will be on the minds of Mets fans for years to come.
“He deserves this moment,” Stearns said of Alonso. “He’s been working so hard all year. He’s a great teammate and he deserves this moment. He’s a great Met. He’s someone who has given a tremendous amount to this franchise to get a truly signature moment like that will go down in the history books that Met fans will talk about for generations. he deserves it. I’m glad he’s got it.”
Now Alonso and the Mets will head to Philadelphia for a matchup with their division rivals, the Phillies on Saturday for the National League Division Series.
But there will be time to think about that later, for Stearns — drenched in champagne in the winning locker room — he wants to embrace this moment.
“I’m just really happy for the organization,” he said. “This group has fought so hard to get to this point. To keep it going like this, to have this moment on the field, to truly enjoy this moment was cool to watch.”
Game 1 of the NLDS will start Saturday at 4:08 p.m.
