After spending the last two games watching from the bench, Gleyber Torres is expected to be back in the Yankees lineup on Friday against the Blue Jays, manager Aaron Boone said prior to Thursday’s 9-2 loss to Toronto.
“I know how much Gleyber cares,” Boone told reporters. “I know how hard he’s working behind the scenes. But I’ve also been in his shoes where the game’s hard and it can beat you down. I think we’re on the same page with that.
“I’m looking forward to what I know is going to be a resurgence for him at some point. … He’s too good a hitter to be held down for too long.”
Torres, who is hitting .215 with a .628 OPS after posting a .273/.347/.452 slash line and .800 OPS last year, is mired in a 2-for-29 slump. He was benched after a 0-for-4 night at the plate Tuesday against the Mets, which he capped by failing to run out a ground ball (although it was attributed to a groin issue).
“We had a really good conversation in Queens, a couple days to reset myself,” Torres told reporters on Thursday. “Came to the cage, working out every morning and just trying to fix a couple things.”
While Torres did not get into the specifics of what he needed to fix he admitted that he has not felt his swing “is there” this season.
“I feel [the] struggle,” he said. “I don’t feel my swing is there. Sometimes I hit the ball really well then 10 days I struggle. I need to find more consistency at the plate, get better at-bats, better swings. …Just focus and working really hard in the cage to fix everything I can possible and just be ready for tomorrow.”
