A day after reliever Tyler Jay struggled to protect a six-run lead in the 10th inning against the Nationals in Washington, D.C., the Mets have called Jose Butto up from Triple-A Syracuse to replace him.
Jay was optioned to Syracuse following Monday’s game.
Butto, who was working as a starter in Triple-A, performed very well for the Mets in seven starts earlier this season, posting a 3.08 ERA (4.16 WHIP) and 1.13 WHIP while striking out 38 batters in 38.0 innings.
With the exception of one start, Butto was excellent after being demoted to Syracuse.
In seven starts, he allowed more than two runs just once. His most recent start came on June 28, when he allowed two runs in 7.0 innings.
Butto will help the Mets’ depleted bullpen, which should soon have Edwin Diaz and Sean Reid-Foley back, and he gives them a second long reliever to go along with Adrian Houser.
It stands to reason that when the Mets call Christian Scott up ahead of Wednesday’s start that Matt Festa will be the pitcher on the way out.
Meanwhile, how the Mets decide to proceed with Butto once Reid-Foley and Diaz are back will be interesting to watch.
