Mets right-hander Drew Smith is undergoing imaging after he experienced forearm tightness while playing catch on Wednesday afternoon, manager Carlos Mendoza revealed.
The skipper said that the team wasn’t too concerned for now, but they’ll wait and see what the results show before making any decisions on a potential IL stint.
The club isn’t expecting to make a roster move before Wednesday’s game against the Yankees, so if Smith is unavailable as expected, they’ll play two relievers down without him and Edwin Diaz.
On that note, the injury likely sparked from that unexpected outing on Sunday night in Chicago in which Smith had to rush to get loose in place of the Mets’ ejected star closer.
Mendoza and trainers came out to speak with the reliever after he recorded the first two outs, and while he remained in the game for the time being, he was pulled after allowing a single to Dansby Swanson.
Smith told reporters afterward that he had a hard time getting loose during the appearance after he was forced to unexpectedly warmup in place of Diaz.
“He didn’t pinpoint anything specific on Sunday he was just having a hard time getting going, then yesterday and today there was some tightness, so we just have to wait and see what the MRI shows,” Mendoza said.
Smith also missed time earlier this season due to a shoulder injury, but he’s pitched to a strong 3.06 ERA with 23 strikeouts across 19 appearances since returning.
