Nick Madrigal, a utility infielder with a good chance of making the Mets out of spring training, left Sunday’s split-squad game against the Washington Nationals in the bottom of the first inning.
With the bases loaded and a run already home for the Nats, Luis Garcia Jr. hit a slow roller off the mound. Madrigal charged from his shortstop position, and threw awkwardly to first base. With his momentum carrying him towards home plate, Madrigal fell to the ground as he threw to first.
After the Mets finished their other split-squad game in Port St. Lucie, manager Carlos Mendoza announced that Madrigal suffered a dislocated left shoulder.
He will undergo an MRI within the next 24 hours, which will provide a better timeline of how long he could be out.
SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino wrote that if the injury is serious the club expects to replace him internally.
Madrigal, the 27-year-old utility man who signed a one-year deal with the Mets this offseason, was replaced by Wyatt Young at shortstop.
