The Mets’ pursuit of superstar Juan Soto is officially on.
According to a report from Mike Puma of the New York Post, Mets owner Steve Cohen is planning to travel to California next week to meet with Soto and his agent, Scott Boras.
Puma notes that “several other owners” are expected to meet Soto and Boras “in the coming weeks.”
Boras, who also represents Pete Alonso, Blake Snell, and Corbin Burnes, among others in this free agency class, said earlier this week at the GM Meetings that the Mets are trying to win a World Series and have been “pursuing it aggressively” via the free agent market.
The Mets are one of at least seven known teams (Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Giants) who have expressed interest in Soto, with their reportedly being four “mystery teams” as well.
SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino reported earlier this week that the Mets have “the ambition, resources, and payroll flexibility to make the top offer to Soto,” and that there is “an enormous amount of informed speculation going around that they are planning to do so.”
Soto, who just turned 26 last month, will all but certainly end up signing the largest position player deal in baseball history, with projections putting his next contract somewhere in the 12-13 year range and somewhere around the $600 million range.
It’s hard to imagine Soto having a better walk year than the one he just had with the Yankees, when he slashed .288/.419/.569 with a career-high 41 home runs and 109 RBI, helping lead the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 2009.
