After being named a reserve for the National League on Sunday evening, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso has officially announced that he will participate in the 2024 Home Run Derby.
Alonso has indicated in the past that his decision to partake in the festivities would depend on whether or not he had been selected as part of the roster for the game.
Now that he’s officially made the cut for the third time in his career, the slugger has confirmed that he’ll participate in the event, which is set to take place on July 15 at Globe Life Field.
This will be Alonso’s fifth time participating in the derby across six big-league campaigns, and he’s looking to join Ken Griffey Jr. as the only three-time champs in league history.
Despite putting up impressive showings of his own, the 29-year-old has been eliminated by young Seattle Mariners star outfielder Julio Rodriguez each of the past two seasons.
Baltimore’s young star Gunnar Henderson and Philadelphia’s third baseman Alec Bohm are the other two players who have been revealed as part of the field so far.
After a bit of a slow start during his contract-year, the big man currently sits sixth in the National League with 18 home runs.
