Mets prospect Drew Gilbert had himself a day on Wednesday for Triple-A Syracuse, picking up two hits including a home run.
Although it came in a losing effort, the young outfielder gave the Syracuse Mets a chance with his fifth-inning home run that cut the Durham Bulls’ lead to 6-4. The homer came on the first pitch — an 88 mph cutter — from Erasmo Ramirez. It was Gilbert’s second home run in Triple-A after spending most of the season in the IL with a hamstring injury.
Gilbert finished 2-for-5 with the RBI and run scored. He also made an incredible grab in the outfield to track down a ball that was destined to be a gapper in left-center in the fourth inning.
The 23-year-old wasn’t the only prospect making waves for Syracuse. Luisangel Acuna finished 1-for-5, the lone hit coming in the third inning that allowed veteran outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. to score on a Durham fielding error.
Brett Baty, starting at second base, went 2-for-4 and scored Acuna in that third inning. He also walked.
Unfortunately, top pitching prospect Brandon Sproat struggled again in Triple-A.
The 23-year-old allowed six earned runs on nine hits (three home runs) in five innings of work. Wednesday was Sproat’s third start since being promoted to Syracuse and has now allowed 13 runs in 12.2 innings pitched.
