Mets pitching prospect Jonah Tong had a debut to remember with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
Tong, 21, pitched six near-perfect innings on 77 pitches (55 strikes) in his first start with the Mets’ Double-A affiliate on Thursday night against the Somerset Patriots. He retired the first 17 batters he faced and struck out nine batters in total.
The only baserunner reached on an error in Tong’s penultimate batter in the sixth. The young right-hander was undeterred as he got top Yankees prospect Spencer Jones to strike out swinging on a pitch way out of the zone.
Tong, the Mets’ No. 10 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was promoted to Double-A on Sept. 1 after he dominated both levels of Single-A ball. The Canada native pitched to a 6-4 record and a 3.04 ERA in 21 starts this season. But it’s his strikeouts that are very impressive.
He struck out 36 batters over 18.2 innings with Port St. Lucie before going up to Brooklyn and sitting down 110 batters across 85 innings.
Tong also had five eight-plus strikeout games including two in the double-digits with the Brooklyn Cyclones.
