With Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis carrying a no-hitter into the ninth inning on Wednesday afternoon in Toronto, the Mets had three outs left to avoid being a part of history.
But more importantly for them, they had three outs left to avoid losing a game they really needed to win — ahead of a day off that precedes a three-game series with the Phillies this weekend in Philadelphia as New York continues to fight for a Wild Card spot.
And in the ninth, Francisco Lindor led off with a mammoth home run to right field that broke up the no-hitter and tied the game, 1-1, in one fell swoop.
After Lindor’s blast, the Mets scored five more runs to pull away.
