Making calls around the league to report on the Juan Soto sweepstakes over the past few days, one hears terms like “final bidding” tossed around, and a general expectation is that Soto will choose his next team within a matter of days.
But before you dive too breathlessly into that disinformation cesspool we call the internet, know that we are not there just yet. On Wednesday morning, a league source with direct knowledge of the process reiterated what agent Scott Boras said publicly on Tuesday evening: “Nothing is imminent.”
For the clubs involved, everything is a guessing game, from team to timing. Bids are happening blindly, meaning that no club knows what the others are offering. The basic dynamic remains similar to what we reported on Monday: Toronto is widely believed to be the most aggressive financially, but a less likely landing spot. The Mets, Yankees and Red Sox are all in hot pursuit of Soto.
Is Soto interested in joining a team on the upswing, like the Mets or Boston? Or staying with a behemoth that he already enjoys in the Bronx?
No one knows, other than maybe Soto and Boras. Still. And no one knows which team is in the lead. Still.
But also: no one believes that this will drag too deeply into the Winter Meetings, which begin on Monday in Dallas. Boras has other clients like Alex Bregman, Corbin Burnes and Pete Alonso, and those players need to get their free agencies going, too.
