Following Sunday’s game, the Yankees will hit the road for a six-game road trip with three in Texas and three in Chicago where two rehabbing starters could very well re-join the team.
Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil are both on the IL with Schmidt having been on the shelf since late May. However, as both pitchers gear up for rehab outings on Sunday and Monday, both could be back with the team soon enough.
In fact, manager Aaron Boone said there’s a “very good chance” of that happening.
Gil makes his start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, the right-hander’s first rehab outing since landing on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. If all goes well, it should be the only start Gil needs before returning to the Yanks.
After Schmidt went three effective innings on Wednesday in his second rehab start but first with Triple-A, he will pitch once more for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.
The 28-year-old threw 58 pitches in his last outing and while Boone didn’t offer specifics, Schmidt figures to throw more than that as he continues to get stretched out after a right lat strain put him on the 60-day injured list.
New York got even more good news on the pitching front as Ian Hamilton will throw a bullpen session on Monday with an eye towards a rehab outing on Wednesday.
Hamilton was scratched from his previous scheduled rehab appearance with back spasms, but the right-hander is feeling better and should be back on the mound soon. He’s been out since June 18 with a right lat strain as well.
In 2.1 innings, Hamilton has been perfect in relief and has struck out six batters for Double-A Somerset.
