It’s a rare division rival trade.
The Yankees have traded catcher Carlos Narváez to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league right-hander Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and international signing bonus pool money.
Narváez was called upon to serve as Austin Wells‘ backup when Jose Trevino went down with an injury last season, and he received limited opportunities, recording just three hits across his first 13 big-league plate appearances.
The youngster had been in the organization since way back in 2016.
He had been enjoying a ton of success at the plate during Winter League this year, smacking seven home runs and five doubles while posting a strong 1.115 OPS in 23 games.
Rodriguez-Cruz is Boston’s No. 13 prospect, and he is a 21-year-old right-hander who pitched to a 2.31 across two levels of the minors last season.
The additional bonus pool money could potentially help New York’s pursuit of Japanese ace right-hander Roki Sasaki, who was officially posted to MLB teams at the Winter Meetings.
