The AAC Tournament got underway Thursday with three games from Dickies Arena in Forth Worth, Texas, with the conference congregating one last time under its current configuration before Cincinnati, Houston and UCF leave for the Big 12. With No. 1 seed Houston and No. 2 seed Memphis the only candidates for at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, there figures to be a sense of desperation among the others still in action as Friday gets underway.
Six of them were part of the tournament’s opening day, beginning with No. 9 seed East Carolina taking down No. 8 seed South Florida for for one more shot at top seed Houston on Friday during quarterfinal action. No. 7 seed UCF and No. 6 Wichita State also advanced past the first round with fairly comfortable wins; they will face No. 2 seed Memphis and No. 3 seed Tulane, respectively.
The Green Wave beat Memphis twice during the regular season, and No. 5 seed Temple pulled off one of the top upsets of the season on the road against the Cougars. No. 4 seed Cincinnati is also on the rise under second-year coach Wes Miller as the program prepares to join the Big 12 for next season. As such, Friday’s action should provide plenty of drama.
