Drama in the ACC regular season came down to the wire on Saturday with No. 16 Miami and No. 25 Pitt duking it out for rights to claim the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. The Hurricanes’ 78-76 win at home over the Panthers clinched their second-ever No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament and second-ever ACC regular-season title to boot. Miami shares the regular-season crown with No. 13 Virginia, which also finished 15-5 in league play. The loss for Pitt is a costly one that pushes it to the No. 5 seed after Clemson and Duke — both of which held tiebreakers over Pitt — won later in the day.
Virginia, by virtue of its tied-for-best conference record and Miami’s tiebreaker, earned the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament as the only other non-Miami team to finish with five or fewer losses in league play. That sets up what should be a tremendous week in Greensboro, North Carolina, with the top dogs trying to fend off numerous schools playing close to home.
If recent history is any indication, then this week should deliver plenty of fun. The last three No. 1 seeds in the ACC Tournament have all failed to win the conference championship dating back to Virginia in 2017. So with UNC, Duke and NC State all staying within the state walls and playing as underdogs, that trend could continue this week.
Action begins on Tuesday with a full afternoon slate of first-round games featuring all the double-digit seeds and continues into Saturday night where we will crown a champion.
