The stage is set for the Big East Tournament championship game on Saturday as No. 1 seed Marquette will take on No. 2 seed Xavier after the teams split a pair of close games during the regular season. Neither team has won a conference title since joining the Big East, which puts historic stakes on a matchup between the teams who finished first and second in the Big East standings.
Marquette reached the title game with an overtime victory against St. John’s in the quarterfinals followed by another dramatic victory over UConn in Friday’s semifinals. The Golden Eagles have won 13 of their past 14 teams since losing 80-76 at Xavier on Jan. 15. Five of their past seven wins have come by two points as Marquette has thrived in late-game situations behind one of the nation’s most efficient offenses.
Xavier has won five straight after beginning postseason play with an 89-84 win over DePaul in the quarterfinals and an 82-60 win over Creighton in the semifinals on Friday. The Musketeers have soldiered on amid a season-ending injury to key veteran forward Zach Freemantle and are getting hot at the right time of year in coach Sean Miller’s first season back with the program.
