The Big East provided some of the regular season’s most intriguing basketball as five programs that are locks for NCAA Tournament bids jockeyed for the league title. But the intrigue for the conference tournament extends beyond the obvious frontrunners to include teams like No. 6 seed Villanova and No. 7 seed Seton Hall.
Both teams are led by first-year coaches and need big weeks to keep their hopes of reaching the Big Dance alive. Both also have reasons for optimism. The Wildcats played their best basketball in the final weeks of the regular season once star guard Justin Moore returned from an Achilles injury, while Seton Hall is coached by Shaheen Holloway, who was the architect of Saint Peter’s historic NCAA Tournament run last season.
They will be the teams to watch during Thursday’s first round action, but they will have their work cut out for them if they advance to Friday’s quarterfinals. No. 1 seed Marquette is one of the top surprise teams in college basketball this season after being picked to finish eighth in the league. Behind the Golden Eagles are the likes of No. 2 seed Xavier, No. 3 seed Creighton, No. 4 seed UConn and No. 5 seed Providence, all of whom looked capable of winning the league at one point or another during the regular season.
Mix it all together, and you have what should be one of the best conference tournaments in the country heading into Selection Sunday.
