The NBA fined Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas $40,000 for using “derogatory and disparaging” language during a postgame interview, according to a statement from the league.
He used an anti-gay phrase that was characterized as “offensive” by the NBA. He made the comment after the Nets defeated the Chicago Bulls 116-105 Thursday.
After Thomas uttered the phrase, TNT broadcaster Jared Greenberg replied: “All right, I’m sure the league office will enjoy that one.”
Thomas, 21, a first-round pick in 2021, issued an apology Friday.
“I want to apologize for the insensitive word I used in the postgame interview,” Thomas wrote on Twitter.

“I was excited about the win and was being playful. I definitely didn’t intend to offend anyone, but realize that I probably did. My apologies again. Much love.”
