Dan Titus and Raphielle Johnson react to LeBron James passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time NBA scoring record. Will any one ever surpass LeBron?
Video Transcript
DAN TITUS: Lebron’s breaking his scoring record. So first, let’s just talk about that. Raph, were you watching last night? Did you see the history go down?
RAPHIELLE JOHNSON: Oh, of course. I think– the schedule setup was really good in that that was basically the only game going on after the second half. So if you weren’t tuned in– maybe you had an early bedtime or something– but it’s always really cool to see actual history take place, and also to see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar receive his flowers. I think he can’t receive them enough when you talk about his greatness, his longevity on the court and off the court. So it was really cool to have him out there for that special moment.
DAN TITUS: Yeah, I agree. It’s been a long path for someone to surpass 38,887 points. I thought it was really cool just being that– in the backdrop of this, Kareem and LeBron haven’t always seen eye-to-eye. And obviously, Kareem humbled himself in that moment to just let LeBron take that moment in. And it’s definitely special. I feel like they shouldn’t have done the whole celebratory thing in the middle of the game.
I thought that kind of messed with the vibe. But hey, respect to the Thunder, because that’s probably one of the more historical moments that– I was surprised that they lost that game after that, man. It’s like– everybody’s attention was just on LeBron. And then they didn’t finish out the game. But yeah, it’s just crazy to watch LeBron. I’ve been watching him since high school.
And just to watch his maturation– be able to defy all of the naysayers, the doubters, and actually be able to get to this point in his career– he’s going to– he’s already fourth in assists. He’s going to have so many records by the end of this, man. It’s just remarkable to watch him play basketball for this long and sustain his performance for this long.
RAPHIELLE JOHNSON: If you think about it, the stories we read about his childhood– he’s not supposed to be here.
DAN TITUS: No.
RAPHIELLE JOHNSON: And yet, here he is. So I think it’s– you think about that– everything he’s accomplished– it’s incredible. He ain’t catching John Stockton in assists, I can tell you that, but–
[DAN CHUCKLING]
But hey, leading scorer. You’re already top five in assists, as well. He’s going to have so many accolades, like you said, by the time he’s done. And he looks like he’s got a few more years in him. He looks healthy. He looks like he’s still enjoying the game and whatnot. So let’s see where this takes us.
DAN TITUS: Yeah, man. I think this is going to be so hard for anyone to break this record, I feel like. And I know people in 1984 were probably saying that as Kareem was trying to approach Wilt’s record. But I just don’t see it with him being able to drop 20 a game from the moment he stepped into the league at 18 years old to the time that he’s 40-plus– it’s going to be very hard, even with load management, I think, for some of these players to end up playing up until their 40s.
So I don’t know. We’ll see what happens, man. But I think that this one is going to be one of those Jerry Rice-type records where no one’s coming close to that one.
