NBA scouts have been out in full force since college practices started and will only log more travel miles now that the season has fully arrived. The 2024-25 college basketball season starts on Monday.
While the entire process will culminate in 60 draft picks at the end of June, there are numerous steps that precede those final decisions.
At this point in the year, the vast majority of NBA teams will tell you that they’re still building out the names on their board before they start thinking about putting them in order. That part of the process will continue for at least a couple more months. But along the way, many teams start sorting prospects into buckets — potential lottery picks, first-round candidates, second-round two-way candidates, and names to watch in the future, even if they’re not quite yet ready for the draft this year.
The Draftables is meant to replicate that process, by providing an all-compassing list of the prospects that NBA scouts are likely tracking at this point in the season. As the year goes on, we’ll begin to sort those prospects into tiers, and ultimately rank them. The entire process is fluid as new names can emerge or evolve at various times, all of which have to be taken into account.
In addition to mimicking the process of an actual NBA front office, The Draftables simultaneously offers fans a viewing guide of the top long-term prospects in any college game. No matter what game you’re watching, because the list is organized by team, it’s very easy to glance through and see the names to know in any game you may be watching.
This year, there are close to 200 players in the college ranks starting the season on the NBA radar, and plenty more overseas. Let’s get started with Draftables, Vol. 1
