Jude Gallagher is the latest Team Ireland boxer to fall in the Paris Olympics after a defeat by Carlo Paalam of the Philippines in the men’s 57kg division.
Both fighters went at it from the bell and landed significant blows in an entertaining first round.
However Paalam, 26, edged the judges scores 3-2.
Paalam, a silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics in the flyweight division who has stepped up in weight for the Paris Games, had the better of Gallagher in the second round and took the round across the board.
Gallagher, the 2022 Commonwealth Games champion for Northern Ireland, dominated the final round but the damage had been done earlier in the bout and his Olympic debut ended in the last-16.
Of the eight Irish boxers who have been in action, only Kellie Harrington and Jack Marley remain in the draw.
Reigning Olympic champion Harrington and world champion Aoife O’Rourke are in action for Ireland later on Wednesday.
