Ryan Garcia will undergo surgery for his injured wrist, the star boxer confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
Garcia was scheduled to share the ring with Rukiya Anpo in an exhibition boxing bout on New Year’s Eve in Tokyo, but ultimately withdrew from the match in mid-December due to injury.
RIZIN, the Japan-based organization staging the fight between Garcia and Anpo, aired a statement from Garcia announcing the boxer’s forthcoming medical treatment on Tuesday’s RIZIN Decade broadcast.
“I’m coming on here to say I’m sorry, sorry that I had to postpone this fight,” Garcia said. “I suffered a hand injury in training camp to my right wrist right here, where after talking to doctors, I’m going to need surgery. And I had to take some time off to heal. I want to thank Fanmio and RIZIN for the opportunity, and I’m still excited to fight in Japan soon. And this will all resume right after I heal up in 2025.
“So make no mistake, I am coming back to finish what we started with Anpo,” Garcia continued, “And he will eat his words, I guarantee it. Just need to take some time off, but when I come back, there will be a bang in Japan.”
Garcia is unable to take part in professional boxing matches until April 2025 as a result of his one-year suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission for testing positive for ostarine in pre-fight VADA tests in relation to his April 20 bout with Devin Haney. He can, however, partake in exhibition matches in what is essentially a loophole.
After Garcia’s withdrawal, Anpo was matched with former K-1 champion kickboxer Sina Karimian for a six-round boxing match that took place Tuesday in Tokyo.
In the final round, chaos erupted as both boxers attempted illegal spinning punches, which forced the referee to try and halt the action.
Anpo and Karimian continued to trade illegal punches, despite being instructed to stop by the referee. As a result, the referee was forced to intervene physically and got caught twice in the head by punches as he did so.
Anpo accidentally hit him with a left hook, but before Anpo could register what had happened, Karimian launched an attack on Anpo. The referee attempted to intervene again and was hit by a right hand from Karimian for his troubles. Finally, officials entered the ring and stopped the uncontrolled brawl.
The fight was resumed after a short break, and Anpo was awarded a shutout unanimous decision win with all the scorecards reading 60-54.
