Avowed players are diving into exploring the Living Lands, but one companion, in particular, is causing frustration—although not everyone agrees with the sentiment.
Companions in Avowed assist on missions and in combat, reacting to the decisions you make and your actions, whether supportive, critical, or trying to persuade you to take a particular approach.
Marius is the second companion gained in Avowed, and his grumpy nature is splitting the player base, with some players sick of him and others saying the little guy is just misunderstood—and you understand his attitude more as the game progresses.
A player on Reddit said they hate “everything he says,” with conversations consisting of “cringe inducing babble” that leaves the character sounding like “a 14-year-old middle school loser trying to sound tough.”
Others agreed with the sentiment, declaring Marius “no fun at all.” But not everyone shares this opinion. Others say the character grew on them as the game progressed, particularly after his companion quest.
Those who like Marius praised him, saying he is “pretty damn hilarious sometimes” and that he reminds them of a “crazy prepper cousin who takes everything too seriously.” For some, the contrast between him and Kai is good entertainment.
Personally, I don’t really have an opinion on Marius as I dropped him pretty much as soon as I could—though not because I found him irritating; I just preferred the abilities other companions offer, and they fit my play style better.
It can be a bit jarring when I return to my Party Camp, and Marius reacts to a decision I’ve just made, even though he wasn’t there and clearly only heard about it second-hand, so I’ll need to have a word with my companions not to talk about me behind my back.
The good news for anyone who does find Marius or any other companion annoying is that you can change who comes along with you for the adventure whenever you visit a Party Camp, although some missions will require certain characters to accompany you.
Marius plays a big role when you arrive at Solace Keep in the fourth main area in Avowed, his home region, so make sure you’re keeping a close eye on the developments in the story to learn who you need where.
Once he’s said his piece and helped progress the adventure, feel free to shut him away back at your Party Camp. I won’t judge you for it.
