One of college football’s most traditional rivalries continues Saturday as the Army Black Knights face the Navy Midshipmen in America’s Game 2023. Navy (5-6) owns a 62-54-7 record in the all-time series but has lost five of the last seven meetings, including a 20-17 setback in double overtime last year. Army (5-6) will earn sole possession of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy with a victory on Saturday but share the prize with both the Midshipmen and Air Force with a loss, with the Falcons retaining the trophy.
Kickoff at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. is set for 3 p.m. ET. The Black Knights are 2.5-point favorites in the latest SportsLine consensus Navy vs. Army odds, while the over/under for total points scored is 28, down from opening at 31.5 Army is the -145 favorite (risk $145 to win $100) on the money line. Why Army can cover
The Black Knights enter the 124th edition of the matchup against Navy with a three-game winning streak that has followed a five-game skid. They went 0-for-2 on pass attempts in their last outing on Nov. 18 but outgained Coastal Carolina 365-105 on the ground en route to a 28-21 victory. Junior quarterback Bryson Daily was one of four members of the team with at least 60 rushing yards, falling six shy of posting his third 100-yard performance of the season.
Daily, Tyson Riley and Ay’Jaun Marshall each ran for a touchdown for the Black Knights, who also returned a blocked punt for a TD for a second consecutive game. A senior running back, Riley led Army with 112 yards on 12 carries against Coastal Carolina in his first contest with a rushing attempt since the season opener, when he ran three times for seven yards in a loss to Louisiana-Monroe. The Black Knights are looking to finish among the top 10 teams in the nation in rushing for the eighth straight year as they enter Saturday ranked 10th with an average of 208.3 yards per game. Why Navy can cover
The Midshipmen are coming off a 59-14 loss at SMU, but they were stellar defensively in their previous two contests. After routing UAB 31-6, Navy defeated East Carolina 10-0 to join Penn State as the only FBS teams to record three shutouts this season. It’s certainly possible the Midshipmen could post another as Army was blanked in back-to-back games in October and Navy’s defense has not allowed a touchdown four times this campaign.
Navy is third in the nation in red-zone defense, permitting opponents to score only 71% of the time, and is tied with California for first in the country with 14 fumble recoveries. Offensively, the Midshipmen rank 14th nationally in rushing with an average of 200.5 yards per contest. The ground attack is led by sophomore fullback Alex Tecza, who has carried 117 times for 724 yards and five touchdowns while posting a pair of 100-yard performances. Meanwhile, freshman quarterback Braxton Woodson rushed for 104 yards and a TD in the setback against SMU last time out. See who to back at SportsLine.
