Brian Schottenheimer’s name hasn’t been mentioned often in this head-coaching cycle. Tennessee State coach Eddie George has created more buzz.
But the betting market seems to believe Schottenheimer will be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Schottenheimer suddenly became the favorite in the market for the next Cowboys head coach at DraftKings. He’s a pretty large favorite too, at -250 odds (bet $250 to win $100). Kellen Moore, who was the favorite, went back to +250 odds.
Schottenheimer has been on the Cowboys’ staff the past three seasons, the last two as offensive coordinator. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has always put a priority on coaches he is familiar with, so that fits.
But it would be a surprising hire, and likely not to be very popular among Cowboys fans.
Schottenheimer, son of the late Marty Schottenheimer, has never been a head coach. He has been an assistant since 1997, on the NFL and college level, and has been an offensive coordinator for four NFL teams. He has a reputation for being too conservative at times. The past two seasons Schottenheimer was Dallas’ offensive coordinator but then-head coach Mike McCarthy called plays.
Just because the betting market moved toward Schottenheimer isn’t necessarily proof that he will get the job. Like NFL Draft markets, oddsmakers don’t necessarily have inside information. They move odds based on bets that come in, particularly from customers they respect as sharp players. There has been no known formal interview with Schottenheimer by the Cowboys during their search. Jones’ familiarity with him provides a link though.
Deion Sanders was the first favorite to be the next Dallas coach in the market, when it was posted. Then it became Moore, the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles who used to hold the same position with the Cowboys. Now it’s Schottenheimer.
The only thing that seems certain is Jones’ intentions are hard to predict as his coaching search moves on.
