Multiple Power Four schools rely on the transfer portal to either provide an instant starter at quarterback or, at the very least, increase their depth and competition at the position as they transition into the next season. The winter transfer window has been open for well over a week, and there’s already been plenty of movement.
So far, five of the top 10 quarterbacks in 247Sports’ Transfer Rankings have already committed to new schools. Sixteen total quarterback transfers have pledged to a power conference school.
And new names are entering every day. The portal’s top two signal callers — former Washington State star John Mateer and ex-Florida State quarterback Luke Kromenhoek — didn’t decide to transfer until the second week of the winter window. As bowl practices and the College Football Playoff unfold, there’s bound to be more movement.
Not every transfer portal fit is created equally. Sometimes teams legitimately upgrade at quarterback. But for every program that evaluates well, there are those that reach for an immediate solution.
With the portal window still open, it felt appropriate to provide an early evaluation for each fit between a quarterback transfer and their next power-conference destination thus far.
