Although he was considered the frontrunner for the starting quarterback position at Boise State, new head coach Spencer Danielson and the Broncos’ staff have chosen to go with sophomore Maddux Madsen — who appeared in nine games and accounted for 11 touchdowns last season — as QB1 for 2024. What does this mean for Nelson and his future in college football? Well, this decision is certainly a pivotal moment in his career as the potential of being labeled as a “bust” lingers.
Danielson made it clear after Boise State held its second scrimmage Saturday that the Broncos could evaluate their quarterback situation on a game-by-game basis this season depending on how the results of the first few games.
“Whoever the starter is as we go through it will be the starter,” Danielson said, via the Idaho Statesman. “Now, they don’t play well, they’re making bad decisions, whatever that might be in the game, we’re going to make changes. But we’re going to go in with a starter, and then we’ll adapt and adjust from there.”
So, while Nelson may not be in a position most expected him to be entering his second year of college football, the opportunity to prove himself and earn a starting role remains.
