Georgia’s DBU tagline gets another notch on its belt.
Top-100 defensive back commit Shamari Earls is no longer a South Carolina cornerback commit. Earls is officially a Georgia cornerback commit. The Thomas Dale (Va.) standout officially confirmed his plan to flip from the Gamecocks to the Dawgs on Sunday afternoon, he told Dawgs247.
It was a combined effort by Georgia’s defensive coaches, led by Donte Williams and Travaris Robinson.
“Really when Coach T-Rob came to see me workout at practice. Coach Donte, he started building more of a relationship after that. I decided to change around my OV schedule to put Georgia back in, and I’m glad I made that decision,” Earls told Dawgs247. “I just had my mind made up on Georgia.”
Georgia’s path to winning this recruitment hasn’t been an easy one.
Earls took his first visit to Georgia the first week of April for a spring practice. That came on the heels of several other visits around the southeast, and Georgia was the last one on the schedule. That means Earls was burnt out by the time he’d made it to Athens, and admits now, he didn’t give it a fair shake.
Two weeks later, Earls committed to South Carolina.
Williams wouldn’t give in, however. Georgia’s new cornerbacks coach began a daily routine of talking with Earls on the phone every morning and every night. That relationship, ultimately, is what gave the Bulldogs the nod in this recruitment.
Earls shifted around his June official visit schedule to accommodate Georgia, removing Alabama and South Carolina officials, and only taking an unofficial to Michigan.
“I’d built a close relationship with Coach Donte, so I wanted to give them another fair shot,” Earls said. “I’m able to talk to him more than just football. We’re able to have a conversation on the phone for over an hour-plus without even talking about football, just how they’ll better me and life. As a player, that’s a coach you want to be around to help you grow as a man and football player.”
With Earls’ commitment, Georgia now has 18 pledges in the 2025 recruiting class. Earls joins the defensive back group with athlete Todd Robinson. He’s Georgia’s sixth highest-rated commitment in the cycle so far.
Earls ranks as the nation’s No. 8 cornerback and the No. 68 overall prospect in the 247Sports recruiting team rankings. Georgia moves up to 277.24 in the team composite rankings, sticking at No. 3 overall behind Ohio State and Alabama.
