Chargers third-year quarterback Justin Herbert has undergone surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the team announced on Sunday.
The Rams revealed the news of Herbert’s surgery in relation to the 2023 Pro Bowl, saying it would preclude him from participating as an alternate this season. The team also said Herbert would be fully cleared to participate in the offseason program at the start of the spring:
“Quarterback Justin Herbert, an alternate for the AFC in the 2023 NFL Pro Bowl Games, will be unable to participate after having surgery on the labrum in his left shoulder last Wednesday, Jan, 25,” the team’s statement read.
“Herbert is expected to be cleared for participation in the offseason program this Spring.”

The Chargers did not specify the extent of the injury, or when Herbert, who is right-handed, suffered it. The team did, however, list Herbert on the Week 18 injury report with an unspecified issue in his left shoulder following a Week 17 31-10 victory over the Rams. He was not sacked in that contest.
Herbert was a full participant in practice that week, which saw Los Angeles lose 31-28 to the Broncos.
Herbert, the 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl selection in 2021, played a full 17-game schedule in 2022. He led the Chargers to a 10-7 record — their best record since 2018 — and a berth in the 2023 NFL playoffs, where they lost in the wild-card round to Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars.
Herbert set career-highs in 2022 in both completions (477), completions (699) and completion percentage (68.2). He also threw for 4,739 yards but saw him throw for a career-low 25 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.
