Navy opened up a 21-7 lead in the first half of its Saturday road game against Air Force, which serves as the first leg of the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy series. The Midshipmen offense was, predictably, excellent, shaking off a lackluster three-and-out to open the game by scoring on three of its next five drives.
Navy had a chance to extend its lead near the end of the half after forcing Air Force to punt for a fourth time, but its drive stalled around midfield when back Eli Heidenreich was tackled in-bounds. Key to Navy’s success all season has been the play of quarterback Blake Horvath, who is quietly emerging as one of the top offensive options in the entire nation. He scored two of Navy’s three touchdowns in the first half, both with his legs. That means he has at least two rushing touchdowns in three of his past four games, and he leads FBS quarterbacks with 10 rushing touchdowns on the year.
Horvath generated 189 yards of offense by himself in the first half; Air Force had 124 as a team. The Falcons do get the ball to start the second half and will have a chance to cut it to a one-score game, but they need to find some consistency on offense. A whopping 45 of their 124 total yards came on one passing play.
