Patrick Mahomes is the greatest quarterback of his generation. But ahead of his fifth straight AFC championship appearance, he’s listening to some advice from the best to ever play.
Mahomes said he spoke with Tom Brady and got some advice from the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback before his Sunday game against the Bengals.
“I talked to Tom a little bit. I have a good relationship with him now and he gives me a lot of advice,” Mahomes said. “I mean why would you not want to learn from the GOAT? Anytime anybody like that wants to give me advice, I’ll take it in. And it’s cool to see the guys that you watched growing up your whole life be able to talk to you on that type of platform.”
BENGALS-CHIEFS PICKS: Straight up | Against the spread
On his “Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray” podcast, Brady interviewed Chiefs coach Andy Reid and praised Mahomes’ leadership and playing style. During the interview, Brady said he spoke with Mahomes earlier in the week after the Chiefs QB played the second half against the Jaguars with a high ankle sprain.
“He’s a tough guy and I told him this the other night. I said, ‘I’m just really happy for you. And that’s what champions are made of at the end of the day,'” Brady said. “I really respect Patrick for how he came out there in the second half and how pissed he was when he got taken out by Coach Reid. I’m sure he had a word for you, but to watch him come out in the second half and play great, that was awesome to watch.”
During the first quarter of the divisional round contest with the Chiefs, Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain when he was brought down by Arden Key. Mahomes finished the drive, but wound up missing the remainder of the first half as he was forced to go to the locker room for X-rays.

Mahomes came back out to play in the second half, albeit with noticeable limitations to his mobility, and finished the 27-20 Chiefs win. He has practiced all week in preparation for the AFC championship back at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
Brady and Mahomes have crossed paths on the football field many times during their careers. They have faced off during the regular season four times and in the postseason twice, which includes the 2019 AFC Championship and Super Bowl 55. Mahomes has gone 3-1 during the regular season, but Brady won both postseason meetings.
The first time the two met came during the 2019 AFC Championship, which the Patriots won 37-31, and after the game, Brady said he went to talk with Mahomes in the locker room.
“I really love watching Patrick play, obviously, because I appreciate what it takes to be that type of leader that he is every day for his team and more so even when I met him the first time in the locker room after our game, Coach Reid,” Brady said. “Why did I do that? Because I respect him as a leader, not just how you throw the football.”

Reid told Brady he appreciated him coming over to speak with Mahomes after that AFC championship, and said that he feels the same way about Mahomes that Brady does in terms of how dedicated he is to trying to help his team win.
“Well, one of the all-time class acts is what you did with him, coming into the locker room and talking to him when he was just a young buck there,” Reid said. “Pure class on that. I appreciated it as a coach, cause you need to get reinforcement from your peers for sure. And nobody better than you to do that.”
