The 49ers injury issues at quarterback went from a mild concern to a catastrophic problem during their 31-7 NFC championship game loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
San Francisco entered the game with two quarterbacks on its active roster: starter Brock Purdy and backup Josh Johnson. Both suffered injuries during the contest that led to the demise of the 49ers’ offense.

Purdy hurt his throwing elbow after being strip-sacked by edge rusher Haason Reddick on the 49ers’ first drive of the game. It was expected that Purdy would be out for the game, as head coach Kyle Shanahan told Fox’s Erin Andrews at halftime.
But then Johnson suffered a concussion in the early stages of the second half. The 49ers had no other quarterbacks available on the active roster, so Purdy was thrown back into the fire. He attempted just one pass despite the 49ers facing a multi-score deficit for the entire half.

The 49ers’ quarterback situation was unfortunate and played a massive role in their postseason elimination. But while nobody was happy to see the team’s passers get hurt, NFL fans couldn’t help but crack jokes about San Francisco’s awful injury luck at the position.
Former Niners quarterback Steve Young was among them, as he joked on Twitter that he was preparing to enter the game after Johnson’s exit.

We are witnessing the rare case of the starting quarterback becoming the emergency quarterback. But such has been the @49ers season-long journey.

Certainly, Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers are disappointed with the way their season ended, but they still had a successful campaign considering the hand they were dealt at quarterback.
The 49ers’ signal-callers will now have a chance to get healthy as the team enters a critical 2023 NFL offseason. San Francisco has a decision to make about free-agent-to-be Jimmy Garoppolo and whether Purdy or 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance will be favored as the team’s long-term starter.
