Tennessee football and NC State face off in the 2024 Duke’s Mayo Classic, the Charlotte Sports Foundation announced Tuesday. The game is scheduled for Sept. 7, 2024 in Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. NC State played in the 2022 Duke’s Mayo Bowl while Tennessee kicked off its 2018 season in Charlotte with a game against West Virginia.
The Vols are scheduled to play the Mountaineers again in the same venue in 2028. This game also replaces a previously scheduled out-of-conference game against Oklahoma, which was canceled due to the fact the Sooners join the SEC next year.
“We appreciate the Charlotte Sports Foundation and NC State on executing a game of this caliber on short notice,” Tennessee athletic director Danny White said in the press release. “This is another terrific opportunity for our football program and Vol Nation to showcase our brand in one of college football’s perennial marquee contests.”
Tennessee and NC State opened the 2012 season in the Georgia Dome, resulting in a 35-21 victory for the Vols. Tennessee opens the 2024 season Aug. 31 against Chattanooga, while the Wolfpack play Western Carolina on opening weekend.
“We are excited to participate in the 2024 Duke’s Mayo Classic,” NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan said. “This is an incredible opportunity for our football program to face a great SEC opponent in our home state. The Charlotte Sports Foundation does a fantastic job and I’m looking forward to an electric atmosphere at Bank of America Stadium.”
This marks just the fourth matchup all-time between the two teams. Tennessee holds a 2-1 advantage all-time, with the first meeting dating all the way back to 1911. The two teams have never played in Knoxville, though the first two contests were held in Raleigh.
“We are thrilled to host a dynamic regional match up that is within driving distance for these two passionate fan bases. Tennessee and NC State have incredible ties to Charlotte and bringing them together to play in Bank of America Stadium is going to be an awesome experience.” Charlotte Sports Foundation director Danny Morrison said. “Games like these don’t happen without an amazing title sponsor like Duke’s Mayo, and the support of the universities and our partners.”
NC State coach Dave Doeren also adds some intrigue to this matchup. The Vols had interest in him as their head coach in 2018 after they decided to move on from Butch Jones. Reports even indicated Tennessee offered Doeren the position.

However, nothing came to fruition, and Doeren received an extension with the Wolfpack before Tennessee could make a move. The Vols settled on Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt after a whirlwind search that saw several candidates fall by the wayside.
