No. 16 Kansas State still has its eyes on a the Big 12 Championship and a College Football Playoff berth. The team standing in its way this week is in-state rival Kansas, which would love to get a win and change the outlook of its season.
Since its loss to BYU on Sept. 21, Kansas State has won three straight conference games. Last week’s victory was a 45-18 dismantling of West Virginia. Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson got whatever he wanted through the air, throwing for 298 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson’s 19 completions were spread out across nine different pass-catchers.
Johnson has struggled with accuracy at times this season, but his dual-threat ability gives the Wildcats a real weapon behind center. Thus far, Johnson has thrown for 1,401 yards, rushed for 306 yards and totaled 17 touchdowns.
The Jayhawks just snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over Houston last weekend, and they needed that one badly. Quarterback Jalon Daniels got back on track, too. He completed 16 of his 21 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns while also running for 58 yards and a score.
The level of difficulty will ramp up this weekend as Kansas goes from facing perhaps the worst team in the Big 12 to one of the best.
