Annika Sorenstam announced the creation of a new award – the Annika Inspiration Award – to “recognize exceptional alumnae who have made a meaningful impact on the world beyond the golf course.” The LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member revealed details of the new award on Wednesday during a panel at the PGA Merchandise Show.
Sorenstam, a winner of 72 LPGA events, including 10 majors, started The Annika Foundation in 2007 to empower and advance young women around the world through golf. The foundation provides opportunities in the game at the junior, collegiate and professional levels.
“We’ve always been focused on empowering young women to discover their passions and follow their dreams on and off the course, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work the foundation has done,” Sorenstam said in a release.
“The Annika Inspiration Award allows us to celebrate the incredible contributions our alumnae are making in all areas of life. It is proof that the values learned through golf—dedication, honesty, resilience and passion—can create lasting success in whatever path they choose.”
“Annika alumnae” will be defined as former participants in an Annika junior event, Annika Cup event, Women’s Amateur Latin America, Annika collegiate event, Annika Development Program and/or the Annika Women’s All Pro Tour, as well as former recipients of the Annika Award presented by Stifel.
The first winner is expected to be recognized in November during The Annika driven by Gainbridge at Pelican LPGA event in Belleair, Florida.
