The youngest golfer to ever play in The American Express golf tournament in La Quinta just missed out on playing in a second PGA Tour event this month Monday, while the golfer who had been the youngest American Express golfer did earn a spot in this week’s tour event.
Charlie Reiter, a former Palm Desert High School star who played in The American Express when he was 18 and still in high school, was the medalist Monday in a qualifying tournament for the Farmers Insurance Open, the PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego this week.
Reiter fired a 5-under 67 at Mission Viejo Country Club to earn one of four spots in the Farmers Insurance event. It will be his first start on the tour since qualifying for the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina last year.
Blades Brown, the 17-year-old Nashville golfer who made his professional debut at The American Express last week, was in a three-for-one playoff for the last of the four Farmers Insurance berths at Mission Viejo, having shot a 69 in regulation. But Brown lost out in the playoff and did not make the San Diego field.

Brown missed the cut in The American Express by three shots last week after playing well in the first two days but posting a 2-over 74 Saturday at the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West. The American Express start was the first of seven sponsor’s exemptions Brown is allowed for 2025 as he attempts to win enough money and FedEx Cup points to earn a full tour exemption.
Reiter, now 25, reached the finals of both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour qualifying in 2024 but fell short of full exemptions to the main tours or developmental circuits for both tours. He has played in two U.S. Opens.
