SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — You’ve seen it on TV. Perhaps you’ve experienced it live and in person. Either way, there’s really nothing like it in golf.
An arena that can hold close to 18,000 fans rings the par-3 hole. There are three levels of suites and two large areas for general admission seating.
Drones fly over head. A fly cam whizzes by. There’s a constant hum of noise from the fans, who erupt with every tee shot, and then depending on whether a golfer’s ball ends up close to the hole or not, either loud cheers or raucous boos then ensue.
Are you not entertained? Welcome to the Coliseum, the 16th hole at the WM Phoenix Open.
Everything you need to know about the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale
The par 3 hole is marked at 163 yards on the official scorecard for the tournament but the tee box moves each day, giving the golfers a different distance to contend with. A year ago, it was 151 yards the first day and 180 the second. On Saturday, they set it at 123 yards. This is all an effort to induce holes-in-one during the most highly attended and wildest day of the week.
How many holes-in-one have their been at the 16th hole at WM Phoenix Open?
Golfweek’s Department of Statistics (not a real thing) has calculated that there have been roughly 15,000 shots fired from the tee box on 16 since the tournament moved to the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale in 1987.
There have been a grand total of 11 aces. The first happened in 1988. The latest was the final round of 2022. There were two that year, in fact.
