Jon Rahm’s arrival on the professional golf scene was marked by his victory at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, a win that moved him into the top 50 of the Official World Golf ranking for the first time.
More than 8 years later, with 52 weeks spent as the No. 1 golfer in the world, his time in the top 50 is over.
On Monday, Rahm fell out of the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time since his maiden PGA Tour victory.
Since his defection to LIV Golf, Rahm hasn’t earned OWGR points in any of those events. He has played brilliantly in LIV events, never placing worse than T-10. However, in events he does accumulate OWGR points, he hasn’t performed up to his expectation.
Last year, Rahm missed the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship before withdrawing from the U.S. Open with a foot injury. He did place T-7 at the Open Championship, T-5 at the Olympics and has three top-10 finishes on the DP World Tour in the span, including a runner-up finish at the Spanish Open.
It has been nearly a year since LIV Golf withdrew its OWGR application, and the league hasn’t shown signs it’s going to reapply anytime soon.
Data Golf ranks LIV Golf players in its world rankings, where Rahm sits fourth. There are, however, only five LIV Golf players in the top 50 of Data Golf. In OWGR, Tyrrell Hatton (No. 8) and Bryson DeChambeau (No. 13) are the only players in the top 50.
But as far as OWGR is concerned, barring a win in a major or DP World Tour event, Rahm’s slide is likely to continue.
