Fourth-ranked Texas was the only team to post an under par score in the third round and the Longhorns went on to win The Hayt, a college golf invitational hosted by the University of North Florida, by seven shots over No. 28 Duke at the Sawgrass Country Club.
Junior Luke Potter played the par-5 holes at 5-under, with an eagle at No. 8, and shot 69 to win the individual title at 10-under-par 206. He defeated senior David Ford of North Carolina (75), the nation’s No. 1-ranked individual, by three shots.
Ford bogeyed four of five holes in the middle of his round.
The Longhorns trailed Alabama by 11 shots after the first round and by 12 entering the final round. The Crimson Tide finished third at 6-under and defending champion North Carolina was fourth at 1-under. The host UNF Ospreys were 11th at 21-over.
Senior Nathan Franks of South Carolina (72) was third at 6-under and junior Jonathan Griz of Alabama (76) and junior Christaan Maas of Texas (71) tied for fourth at 5-under.
Texas had additional depth provided by freshman Daniel Bennett (70—216), who tied for 16th and junior Tommy Morrison (72—217) who tied for 18th.
UNF sophomore Filippo Serra (75—218) and senior Jason Duff (76—218) tied for 18th.
