PALM BEACH GARDENS — Caddie G.W. Cable of Lake Worth had reason to celebrate after his player, Jacob Bridgeman, tied for second in the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches at PGA National.
Bridgeman fired 7-under 64 on Sunday to move into contention before finishing two shots behind champion Joe Highsmith. He was 17 under (68-68-67-64) for the tournament. Bridgeman and Cable had a long conversation after his tee shot at the par-5 18th, but the discussion wasn’t about whether to go for the green in two from 263 yards.
“No, we were just passing time,” Cable said. “The wind was in, and there was no way we were going to go for it. I just wanted him to think about something else while the players were walking off the green. It was a great week.”
The 48-year-old Cable has one win on the PGA Tour, when he caddied for Chris Kirk. It was a career-best finish for Bridgeman, a 25-year-old from Clemson who turned pro in 2022.
