Although this year’s event has a lot of work to do to live up to Rickie Fowler’s heroics at last year’s tournament, it’s looking like we’ll have another exciting finish at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Overnight rain on Friday set up wet and gettable conditions for the 75 players battling it out on Sunday in Detroit, and while scores weren’t crazy low, a lot of players were able to take advantage.
Leaders didn’t tee off until 3 p.m. on Saturday due to a rain delay, but that didn’t stop Akshay Bhatia for holding onto a share of the lead (along with Aaron Rai) with a 4-under 64. Amateur Luke Clanton, who finished tied for 41st at the Masters in April, fired the best round of the day, carding a 7-under 65 to surge into a tie for seventh, just three shots back of the lead.
The Florida State alumnus is set to tee off at 1:30 p.m. in a pairing with Min Woo Lee, coming off a tie for 21st in the U.S. Open. They’ll be followed by Sam Stevens and Erik van Rooyen at 1:40, Cam Davis and Cameron Young at 1:15 and, finally, Bhatia and Rai at 2 p.m.
