Sergio Garcia made it clear he wants to be on the 2025 European Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black this fall.
If he continues playing like he has in recent months, captain Luke Donald is going to have no choice but to consider the longtime stalwart in the Europe team room.
Garcia captured his second LIV Golf win dating to last summer with a three-shot triumph at LIV Golf Hong Kong. Garcia shot 7-under 63 in the final round to win by three shots over Dean Burmester. Garcia improved his score by one shot every day, and his win Sunday is proof his strong play has carried over from the end of last season.
He’s hoping one person in particular will take notice.
“I think he’s watching,” Garcia said of Donald. “We’ve been in touch, so I know that he’s keeping an eye. The only thing I can do is keep playing good golf, and I just want to help the European team like I’ve tried to do every single time I’ve been a member of that team, and hopefully he will think I’m good enough for it.”
In addition to his individual win at Fanling Golf Club, which carries with it a $4 million prize, Garcia’s Fireballs GC team won for the second time in three events this season, topping Stinger GC by a shot.
Phil Mickelson earned the best finish of his LIV Golf career, a solo third finishing four shots back of Garcia.
“I really had a great offseason, and I figured some things out, and I’m playing a different style of golf,” Mickelson said. “I’ve been playing really well at home, and it’s great to take it here.”
LIV Golf will compete next week at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore before making its debut in the U.S. the first week of April at Trump Doral in Miami.
