Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods were a large part of TGL’s development, as their joint venture, TMRW Sports, founded the start-up league that is set to debut on Jan. 7 at the SoFi Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
McIlroy met with the media on Friday to discuss the upcoming video series, ‘unCOMMON: Building a Boston Sports Team,’ which will give fans an inside look at the creation of Boston Common, one of six TGL four-man squads — Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama are the other members of McIlroy’s team.
“It’s been a really cool process to be a part of,” McIlroy said. “These sort of behind-the-scenes documentaries are becoming more common in golf and in sports, obviously with “Full Swing” on Netflix and having the cameras follow us sort of day-to-day and PGA TOUR events and majors.
“So, having the cameras follow for this docuseries on common didn’t really feel that much different but hopefully the viewers will enjoy it and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look of what’s went into the creation of this team with myself alongside Fenway Sports Group as well.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the TGL’s SoFi Center, it’s pretty incredible.
The playing area features a 64×53-foot simulator screen, a 22,475-square-foot short-game area and a 41-yard-wide turntable that rotates the green to change approach angles.
The craziest part of TGL’s setup, however, is the bunkers. They feature the same sand as a certain Alister Mackenzie track in Georgia.
“Yeah, so the playing surfaces are very realistic because they are real. We’re playing off real Bermuda grass for the fairways, real Bermuda rough, if you do hit into the rough. And, yeah, I guess the sand, that is the same sand that Augusta uses in their bunkers,” McIlroy said.

“And once you get within 40 yards of the green, then you transition to the green zone where all of that is artificial turf. But I still feel like the ball reacts very realistically on the green.”
The league’s first match will pit the New York Golf Club against the Bay Golf Club. It will be televised on ESPN, and available through streaming on ESPN+, at 9 p.m. ET.
