Don’t blink at the Masters Tournament this year. You might miss a Højgaard brother.
The Augusta National Golf Club on Wednesday announced it has invited Nicolai Højgaard of Denmark, who will join his brother Rasmus in the field to mark the first time twin brothers will have played in the season’s first major championship April 10-13 at the Augusta National Golf Club.
While the Masters has a set of requirements for an invitation, it also reserves the right to invite players who have not otherwise qualified. In addition to Nicola Højgaard, the club also invited LIV Golf League member Joaquin Niemann of Chile.
“In support of Augusta National’s efforts to develop interest in golf globally, deserving international players not otherwise qualified have been invited throughout the Tournament’s history,” Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said in a statement. “The tradition continues as we welcome Nicolai and Joaquin back to the Masters, as both players have showcased their talent while competing around the world. We look forward to their arrival this April.”
Nicolai Højgaard will play in his second Masters tournament. He contended most of the week last year, briefly held the lead on Saturday and finished tied for 16th.
He is No. 60 on the current World Golf Ranking and closed the 2024 DP World Tour season with five consecutive top 25 finishes in five countries. Nicolai Højgaard has three DP World Tour victories.
Rasmus Højgaard will make his Masters debut. He qualified by being among the top 50 on the World Golf Ranking at the end of 2024 and has won five times on the DP World Tour. He was the first player born after 2000 to win a DP event when he won the 2019 Mauritius Open.
Niemann will play his sixth Masters and has made the cut four times. He is No. 71 on the World Golf Ranking. Niemann won twice on the PGA Tour before jumping to LIV Golf, where he has won twice.
