Who they’re for: Any golfer who needs more spin, height and stability off the tee and from the fairway.
What you should know: Titleist designed the GT1 fairway woods to be big, easy to hit and adjustable to help players and fitters fill gaps and hit shots to precise distances.
The deep dive: There are very few golf clubs that can benefit the most elite players and recreational golfers who struggle to maximize carry distance, but the new Titleist GT1 fairway woods can be added to the list.
Offered as a 3-, 5-, 7- and 9-wood, the GT1 fairway woods have a stainless steel face and crown and a low profile, giving them a confidence-inspiring look in the address position. In the address position, the GT1 fairways will look larger than the company’s GT2 or GT3 fairway woods, but it’s what Titleist designed on the bottom of the club that creates an extremely high level of versatility.
The GT1 fairway woods have a pair of weights in the sole, one forward and one in the back. The club comes standard with an 11-gram weight in the back and a 3-gram weight in the front to maximize stability and provide more height and spin to players who struggle with carry distance. In this setup, the GT1 has both the lowest center of gravity and the highest moment of inertia, making it the easiest Titleist fairway wood to hit.
However, the configuration of the weights is very similar to the setup found in the GT4 driver, a club designed for fast-swinging, high-spin players. Accomplished golfers who like the look of a large fairway wood can shift the heavier weight in the GT1 to the forward position, affix the 3-gram weight in the back and create a club that produces a more piercing flight with less spin and more ball speed.
So, while the previously released TSR1 and TSi1 fairway woods may have been suited to slower- and moderate-speed players, the GT1 could be an option for low-spin golfers with faster swings.
In addition, the GT1 fairway woods have been made with Titleist’s 16-position SureFit adjustable hosel system. It lets players and fitters lower the loft by as many as 0.75 degrees or increase it by as many as 1.5 degrees. Combined with the moveable weights, the GT1 should make it easier for players to create the flight they want and hit the distance they are looking for more.
Titleist is also making the GT1 available in an ultra-lightweight build that features lighter shafts and grips to help golfers generate clubhead speed.
