For the second home game in a row, the Chicago Blackhawks hosted a team from Alberta. This time, it was the Calgary Flames who were right there on the bubble of the Western Conference playoff picture coming in.
Out of the gate, the Blackhawks did not have their skating legs. It was obvious early that it was going to be a long night. Calgary had early possession and kept it until they took a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal scored by Jakob Pelletier at 1:14.
Just over a minute later at 2:38, Lukas Reichel made a nice play to find Louis Crevier who ripped his second goal of the season. Instead of letting that one nice play gain them some momentum, the Hawks just let Calgary take over again.
Before the opening frame was over, Jakob Pelletier added his second of the game and Mikael Backlund added one of his own to make it 3-1.
Once the second period came around, things went from bad to worse as Jake Bean scored just 1:55 into the middle frame to make it 4-1.
The Hawks thought they might be able to get something going after that as they were awarded a five-minute power play in the middle of the period as Calgary’s Martin Popisil was given a major and a game misconduct for boarding Taylor Hall.
While on that man advantage, Connor Bedard scored to get the Hawks back within two. This was also the 100th career point in the young career of Connor Bedard.
He became the fastest teenager (112 games) to reach that milestone since Sidney Crosby did it in 80 games back in 2006. Overall, he is the 24th player in history to have 100 points as a teen.
Because the power play was a major, it kept going after the goal. That’s when Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau took advantage of a bad Seth Jones turnover to find Yegor Sharangovich who didn’t miss his shorthanded chance to make it 5-2.
That stood as the final as the Hawks were blown out again. Losing by 3 goals might not be “blown out” in a lot of cases but it was in this game. Chicago never had a lead, was losing by more than one for most of the game, and was outshot 36-25. There was never a realistic chance for them to win based on their play.
Next up for the Hawks is a road tilt on Thursday night with the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena. It will be the battle of Central Division teams who wish they were having a better season.
