CHICAGO – The Chicago Blackhawks came into Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Stars trying to snap a three-game losing streak.
In a packed and loud United Center, things started well for the home team. Connor Bedard gave Chicago a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 12:20 of the first period. Leading up to that goal, the Hawks had the puck on their stick more than the Stars, were hard on the forecheck, and looked like the better team in every way.
Once they got the lead, however, things went down south. After Arvid Soderblom made a brilliant save on Evgenii Dadanov, Jamie Benn found a rebound and scored to tie the game.
That was the first of five unanswered goals scored by the Stars which made it 5-1. There wasn’t a point during that stretch where it felt like the Hawks had it in them to tie it up. They looked more like the team that had a horrific loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.
The turning point of the game came in the second period when the game was tied at one. Tyler Bertuzzi was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing former Blackhawk Colin Blackwell.
It was an iffy call but the Blackhawks had five minutes of an uninterrupted penalty kill to deal with and had no Bertuzzi for the rest of the game.
Just 12 seconds into the kill, Jason Robertson made it 2-1 Stars and they took the momentum for the rest of the game.
That aforementioned 5-1 lead for Dallas eventually became the final score. The Blackhawks have now lost four games in a row.
Of course, Connor Bedard scoring his 10th goal of the season is good news as he’s been red hot since snapping that 12-game goal drought earlier in the year. He’s firmly back on the path of being one of the most impactful young players in the game right now.
Next up for Chicago is the Winter Classic. It will take place at Wrigley Field on Tuesday evening (New Year’s Eve). If they wanted to avoid the five-game losing streak in the Winter Classic, they need to be much better than they were in this game.
